Code consultation: queries about insurance requirements

Since issuing the consultation on the new Code (Handbook), we have received some queries about the insurance requirements in the new Code.

The BSB continues to believe that it is in the public interest to maintain a single mutual indemnity provider for the self-employed Bar, as the mutual model is beneficial and may not continue to be sustainable otherwise. In practice this would mean that self-employed barristers would continue to use BMIF for their basic cover.

As part of the consultation, we welcome comments (particularly from representatives of lay consumers) about the extent to which this model continues to be appropriate. It will be a matter for BMIF whether they wish to offer indemnity cover to entities but we do not propose to oblige entities to use a specific provider. Again, we would appreciate views as part of consultation responses.
