Our Authorisation Framework sets out the standards that an organisation must meet in order to provide education and training for the Bar and become an Authorised Education and Training Organisation (AETO). AETOs are authorised to deliver one or all components of training for the Bar through one of four approved training pathways and includes organisations previously known as Providers, Pupillage Training Organisations and Approved Training Organisations.
What organisations are eligible to apply for pupillage training?
There is a misconception that pupillage must be completed within chambers. In fact, any of the following organisations (known as the employed Bar) can also provide pupillage:
- BSB entities, which are authorised by us to provide legal services.
- Authorised non-BSB bodies, such as firms regulated by the SRA or other approved regulators to undertake reserved legal activities.
- Non-authorised bodies that have in-house counsel, such as commercial companies, local authorities and government bodies.
How to apply for pupillage training
You can apply for authorisation as an AETO through the MyBar portal. Guidance is available in the portal to help you to understand the evidence to submit with an application. Applications must also be accompanied by a fee payment of £250 for the cost of an initial review.
In most cases, no further costs will be necessary. If we require more information due to the complexity or scale of your proposed training pathway, we may need to bring in an Expert Advisor costing up to £400 per day. We may visit an AETO that is seeking authorisation.

Existing providers of pupillage training
If you were previously approved by us to provide pupillage, and you want to continue to do so in the future, you must also meet the criteria for authorisation set out in the Authorisation Framework. You must apply for authorisation as an AETO, if you have not already done so.
