Like all of you we are saddened following the Channel 4 News broadcast on sexual harassment at the Bar that covered specific details from a recent high-profile case that resulted in a barrister being disbarred. We take allegations of sexual harassment seriously and we admire and are thankful to those who come forward with the courage to do so. Without them we cannot take successful enforcement action which helps to combat and eradicate this type of behaviour.

We are sorry that the Bar Standards Board processes added to the trauma the witnesses felt in already extremely distressing circumstances. This is something that we will improve immediately. We need to create a safer, more supportive environment for people who have the courage to come forward. One of our first actions will be to fast-track specialist victim support services for those who have reported incidents of bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct.

We encourage anybody who is experiencing this behaviour at the Bar, or has seen others suffering this type of behaviour to get in contact and report this. Details of how to do this can be found here.

We also work with organisations that can provide support on bullying and harassment.

LawCare is the mental health charity for the legal sector. They offer a free and confidential helpline providing emotional support on 0800 279 6888.

Mental Health & Wellbeing at the Bar provides resources for barristers, clerks, staff, students and pupils on a wide range of issues which can impact on well-being.

Victim Support offers emotional and practical assistance to anyone affected by crime.
