Barrister Peter Wareing was ordered to be disbarred by an independent disciplinary tribunal which concluded on 26 April 2024 following findings of professional misconduct in relation to a number of charges brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).
The charges related to a period of suspension from practice between July 2021-January 2022, during which Mr Wareing accepted instructions to act for clients and acted on their behalf while holding himself out as a barrister, including appearing in court, when he knew that he was not authorised to do so.
Commenting on the order, a BSB spokesperson said: “The public should be able to expect barristers to behave with integrity and comply with orders made by a Disciplinary Tribunal. Deliberately and repeatedly failing to comply with a suspension from practice carries real risks of both harm to public confidence in the profession and its regulation. There are also risks to Mr Wareing’s actual and potential clients. The tribunal’s decision to disbar Mr Wareing demonstrates the seriousness of such misconduct as well as the repeated nature of his failures to comply with his regulatory obligations”.
The tribunal’s decision is open to appeal.

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) is responsible for appointing and administering Disciplinary Tribunals on behalf of the President of the Council of the Inns of Court and its tribunals are independent of the BSB. The BSB is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate. The sanctions imposed are a matter for the tribunal having regard to the facts of the individual case and the BTAS Sanctions Guidance.
