Today we have announced that Hermione McEwen has been appointed as our second Independent Reviewer to provide independent assurance that our regulatory decision-making is fair, consistent, and in line with agreed procedures.

Hermione is an experienced Solicitor and fee-paid First-tier Tribunal Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber. She also serves as Chair of Fitness to Practise Tribunals for several professional healthcare regulators and as a Lay Member of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

She brings over 20 years’ experience in law, regulation and adjudication, with a strong commitment to fairness, accountability, and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Mark Neale, Director General, Bar Standards Board, said:

“We are very pleased to welcome Hermione as our new Independent Reviewer. Her breadth of experience across the judiciary and professional regulation will be invaluable in maintaining the integrity and transparency our decision-making processes.

Hermione McEwen, Incoming Independent Reviewer, Bar Standards Board, said:

“I am looking forward to working closely with Independent Reviewer Sarah Baalham, reviewing regulatory decisions taken by staff, checking for fairness and consistency.  I fully appreciate the importance of the profession being able to trust their regulator to deal with reported concerns fairly.  I also recognise the importance of the public trusting the Bar Standards Board to deal with reported concerns about barristers fairly, to ensure that high standards of professional behaviour are maintained.”
