How to apply for the BPTC

Please note that the online application system is not managed by the Bar Standards Board. 

Applications for a place on the BPTC must be made through the online application system BarSAS

Entry requirements

1.  To be considered for a place on the BPTC, applicants must satisfy the Academic Stage requirements. Usually this would entail gaining (or being predicted to gain) a minimum of a 2:2 in their Qualifying Law Degree or a 2:2 in a non-law degree and a Pass in the Common Professional Examination, or Graduate Diploma in Law.

2.  A key entry requirement is that all students are fluent in English. This rule applies regardless of the student's first language. From the first day of the course and at all subsequent times, students must be able to demonstrate that their oral and written English language ability is at least equivalent to

  1. a minimum score of 7.5 in each section of the IELTS academic test; or
  2. a minimum score of 73 in each part of the Pearson Test of English (academic). 

This score must be achieved across all sections in the same sitting.

 

3.  Candidates must pass the Bar Course Aptitude Test (BCAT). You can apply for BPTC place via BarSAS before you have taken and passed the BCAT.

4.  Any candidate enrolling on the BPTC must be a member of one of the  Inns of Court.

Please note: Individual Providers may impose additional selection criteria over and above the minimum requirements specified in requirment 1 and 2 above. Please check the prospectus of the Provider you wish to apply to.

Once your application is submitted, the BPTC Providers make the decision on whether you will be offered a place.

BPTC places

 

There is heavy competition for places on the BPTC. In the region of 2,500 candidates apply for approximately 2,164 places each year.

 

 

Fees

 

Course fees for the 2015/2016 intake range from around £12,500 to around £18,000 including all fees/deposits. Please check the websites of indvidual Providers for current course fees.
