Annual Bar and Young Bar Conference 2017

In November in conjunction with the Legal Practice Management Association(LPMA), we ran a workshop at the Annual Bar Conference and Young Bar Conference 2017 titled 'Transparency and feedback: the future of legal services.'

Date: 4 November 2017

Time: 1.50pm - 3pm

Location: Westminster Park Plaza, 200 Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7UT.

Moderator: Dr Vanessa Davies, Director General, Bar Standards Board.

  • Naomi Ellenbogen QC, Vice Chair, Bar Standards Board;
  • Ewen Macleod, Director of Strategy and Policy, Bar Standards Board; and
  • Fiona Fitzgerald, Chief executive of Radcliffe Chambers and committee member of LPMA.

Learning outcome: Develop how you work with clients to ensure transparency about instructions and fees. Understand how these developments will affect your practice.

At the end of June together with other legal services regulators, we published our plans to address the recommendations contained in the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) report into legal services. Our plan focuses on improving standards of consumer transparency regarding the services provided by barristers, their fees and the availability of redress. The aim is to enable consumers to compare legal service providers more easily. We issued a formal consultation on proposals at the end of September. We are also piloting some new approaches and are looking for volunteers from the public access Bar and the family law Bar to take part in the pilots.

At this session we presented the consultation headlines and the LPMA set out some of the opportunities and challenges it saw in the proposals. Both organisations then responded to questions from conference attendees.
