Annual Bar and Young Bar Conference 2016

On 15 October we ran a workshop about Alternative Business Structures (ABSs) at the Annual Bar and Young Bar Conference in London.

Our Director General Dr Vanessa Davies moderated the event with speakers including:

  • Martin Davies from Clerksroom;
  • Daniel ShenSmith from Shensmith Barristers; and
  • Cliodhna Judge - Head of Supervision and Authorisation at the BSB

In 2016, we aim to commence the authorisation of ABSs. This builds on our entity regulation regime which has been in effect for the last 18 months. ABSs will provide lawyers and non-lawyers with an opportunity to develop innovative and competitive models for the delivery of legal services which will be able to broaden choice for members of the public.

In an increasingly competitive legal market there are growing challenges on barristers to think creatively about how they deliver legal services.

This session provided information about the genesis of the ABS regime, the approach to its regulation and the opportunities that arise from their availability to barristers. Delegates heard from the regulator and innovators within legal services who are at the forefront of pushing the boundaries in the provision of legal services.
