27 September 2016

Dr Peter Barnett was ordered to be disbarred by an independent disciplinary Tribunal at a hearing on Monday 26 September 2016, following charges brought by the Bar regulator.

The Tribunal's decision follows Dr Barnett's conviction in September 2015 for six offences of fraud. These relate to Dr Barnett evading rail fares in and out of Marylebone Station between 1 April 2012 and 24 November 2014.

A BSB spokesperson said: "Dishonest conduct is incompatible with membership of the Bar. The Tribunal's decision to disbar Dr Barnett reflects this."

Dr Barnett has never held a practising certificate as a barrister in England and Wales but was Called to the Bar in 2007.

About Dr Peter Raymond Barnett

Dr Barnett was Called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in March 2007.

He also qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, and in New South Wales, Australia. Regulators in those jurisdictions have been notified of the Bar Tribunal's decision to disbar him from the Bar of England and Wales.

About disciplinary tribunals

The appointment, operation, and decisions (including sentencing) of disciplinary tribunal panels are performed by the Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS). BTAS is run independently of the Bar Standards Board, the barristers' regulator, which is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers. These charges are then adjudicated on by BTAS' tribunal panels.
