4 January 2016

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has today announced that Naomi Ellenbogen QC has been appointed its new Vice-Chair with effect from 1 January 2016. Naomi will take over from Patricia Robertson QC who stood down from her role at the independent regulator of barristers at the end of 2015.

The Board has a lay majority and a non-barrister Chair in Sir Andrew Burns KCMG. Naomi joined the Board as a barrister member in 2015 having served as Barrister Vice-Chair of the regulator's Professional Conduct Committee since 2011 and as a member of that committee since 2005.

Naomi Ellenbogen QC said: "I am delighted to be taking up my position as Vice-Chair at such an interesting time for the Bar Standards Board as a modern and effective regulator. These are challenging times for the Bar and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Board to ensure that regulation remains proportionate and focused on the public interest. I am particularly keen to ensure that our dialogue with the profession which we regulate is meaningful and mutually beneficial. I am honoured to be taking over from such a distinguished predecessor."

Sir Andrew Burns, Chair of the BSB, said: "I am very pleased that Naomi Ellenbogen QC has accepted our invitation to take over the Vice-Chairmanship of the BSB, in succession to Patricia Robertson QC who has made such an influential contribution to our work in recent years. The Vice-Chair has a critically important role to play. Naomi's experience and insight into the realities of practising at the Bar will be enormously valuable to the Board as we continue to address issues of professional regulation which will have a profound effect on the future of the Bar and all those we regulate in England and Wales."
