Mr Julian Boyd Orr (a practising barrister) was ordered to be disbarred by an independent disciplinary tribunal which concluded on 4 March 2024 following findings of professional misconduct in relation to charges brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).

The Tribunal found that Mr Orr had dishonestly submitted a fee note for his professional fees in court proceedings in which he claimed a fee of £1,000 plus VAT knowing that the fee stated was false and that he had agreed a fee for the relevant work of £500 plus VAT. The Tribunal also found that Mr Orr acted dishonestly in subsequently seeking to explain the higher fee in a witness statement which he knew would be used in assessment proceedings.

Commenting on the order, a BSB spokesperson said: “The Tribunal found that Mr Orr had acted dishonestly in relation to this fee note and their decision to disbar Mr Orr reflects the fact that dishonesty is wholly incompatible with membership of the Bar.”

This decision is open to appeal.

Notes to editors

Mr Orr is suspended from practice immediately and the disbarment will come into effect after any appeal or once the usual time period has elapsed if no appeal is received.

About disciplinary tribunals

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) is responsible for appointing and administering Disciplinary Tribunals on behalf of the President of the Council of the Inns of Court and its tribunals are independent of the BSB. The BSB is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate. The sanctions imposed are a matter for the tribunal having regard to the facts of the individual case and the BTAS Sanctions Guidance.
