Barrister Arbab Khalil was ordered to be disbarred by an independent disciplinary tribunal which concluded on 9 January following a finding on one charge of professional misconduct brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).

The tribunal found that Mr Khalil engaged before call in conduct which was dishonest and discreditable. After his declaration to Lincoln’s Inn about call he did not update them that Cardiff University had commenced an investigation into his academic conduct after Mr Khalil submitted someone else’s work, which he presented as his own dissertation. This was a failure to keep his Inn updated about information that amounted to a change in the position from the declaration he had submitted.

Spokesperson, The Bar Standards Board said:

“Mr Khalil’s conduct fell below the high standards reasonably expected of barristers and the importance of being honest in applications to the Bar and the sanction reflects this.”

Arbab Khalil was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in March 2024.

About disciplinary tribunals

The appointment, operation, and decisions (including sentencing) of disciplinary tribunal panels are performed by the Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS). BTAS is run independently of the Bar Standards Board, the barristers' regulator. We are responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate. The sanctions imposed are a matter for the tribunal having regard to the facts of the individual case and the BTAS Sanctions Guidance.

Information on how to report concerns about barristers can be found on our website.
