The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers called to the Bar in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting the education and training requirements for becoming a barrister. The vocational stage of training, currently the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), ensures that students intending to become barristers acquire the skills, knowledge of procedure and evidence, attitudes and competence to prepare them for pupillage.

An opportunity has arisen for six Associate Examiners to join the BSB to assist with the question review process; three are to assist the Civil Litigation Examining team, and three are to assist the Criminal Litigation Examining team.

The role involves:

  • reviewing examination material submitted by question writers, ensuring that the questions cover the Civil or Criminal Litigation syllabus, conform to the BSB house style of drafting, accurately reflect the current law; provide an appropriate level of challenge to prospective candidates.
  • writing exam questions that are consistent with the current examinable syllabus; conform to the BSB house style of drafting; accurately reflect the current law; provide an appropriate level of challenge to prospective candidates.
  • providing constructive feedback to questions writers on the material submitted and attended training events as required by the BSB.

Time commitment for the role will be around 10 days per annum. The initial appointment will be on a term of one year with the possibility of renewal by mutual consent.
