Unregistered barrister Rachael Tansey has been ordered to be suspended from practising for twelve months by an independent disciplinary tribunal, which concluded on 17 June 2026, following three charges of professional misconduct brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).

The tribunal found that Miss Tansey behaved in a way which is likely to diminish the trust and confidence that the public places in her or in the profession, when in April 2023, she failed to provide a specimen of blood for analysis to police on request after they stopped her on suspicion of drink driving. In January 2025, Miss Tansey was convicted for the criminal offence but failed to report this to the BSB.

A BSB spokesperson said:

“The conduct of Miss Tansey fell below the high standards reasonably expected of barristers. The public should be able to expect barristers not to break the law. Barristers, even if they are unregistered, also have an obligation to promptly inform their regulator when they are convicted of a criminal offence. Where they do not, this can result in enforcement action, as in this case.”

The tribunal’s findings remain subject to appeal.
