The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is seeking to appoint a new lay Board member for an initial four-year term.

This appointment comes at an important time for the BSB. We are undertaking a wide-ranging Reform Programme and are about to launch a consultation on our new five-year strategy, which will set our priorities for the rest of the decade. The legal services sector continues to evolve, with rapid technological advances changing the way services are delivered, while the need to uphold professional standards, equality, and access to justice remains as critical as ever.

The BSB Board, which comprises 11 members, six of whom are lay members, including the Chair, sets the organisation’s strategic direction and holds the Executive to account. As a lay member, you will play a central role in helping us ensure that regulation of the Bar continues to serve the public interest, supports a strong, independent and diverse profession, and safeguards the rule of law.

We are seeking an individual with significant board-level experience in a regulator or regulated organisation, with strong regulatory expertise and the ability to influence at the most senior levels. Candidates must bring a clear understanding of professional regulation, governance, and organisational change, and be able to demonstrate credibility, strong diplomatic skills, and the ability to command confidence. To be eligible, you must meet the statutory definition of a lay person under the Legal Services Act 2007, meaning you must never have been authorised as a legal services professional.

The Board is committed to reflecting the diversity of the profession we regulate and the public we serve. We welcome and actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, communities and experiences.

The role offers renumeration of £10,000, for a time commitment of approximately two days per month.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday 22 September 2025.
