Barrister Zeeshan Saqib Mian was ordered to be disbarred by an independent disciplinary tribunal which concluded on 16 June following charges of professional misconduct brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB). The Tribunal also directed that Mr Mian’s practising certificate be suspended pending the final determination of any appeal and ordered him to pay the BSB £2,670 (inclusive of VAT) in respect of their costs.

Mr Mian was accused of 12 charges of professional misconduct with the tribunal deciding he should be disbarred on all 12 charges. The tribunal found that Mr Mian made a number of false declarations in relation to his Call Declaration for the purpose of being called to the Bar. These included failing to disclose that he was the subject of a formal investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and that the SRA had imposed conditions on his practising certificate as a solicitor prior to and at the time of his call to the Bar.

Commenting on the tribunal’s decision, a BSB spokesperson said: “It is right that the public should have confidence that barristers act with honesty and integrity. Failing to be honest at the point of admission to the Bar clearly diminishes this and is a serious matter. The tribunal’s decision to disbar Mr Mian reflects the fact that these actions are not compatible with membership of the Bar.”

The tribunal’s decision is open to appeal.

About disciplinary tribunals

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) is responsible for appointing and administering Disciplinary Tribunals on behalf of the President of the Council of the Inns of Court and its tribunals are independent of the BSB. The BSB is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate. The sanctions imposed are a matter for the tribunal having regard to the facts of the individual case and the BTAS Sanctions Guidance.
