BSB seeks new members for its Advisory Pool of Experts (APEX)

22 January 2019

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is recruiting new members to its Advisory Pool of Experts (APEX).

The BSB uses APEX for advice and support, to help us develop policy and make regulatory decisions. APEX is made up of a diverse group of people, from a wide range of backgrounds, who are experts in their respective fields.

The BSB is now looking for new barrister members with expertise in:

  • Family law (x3);
  • Civil law (x3);
  • Chancery law (x3);
  • Criminal law (x2, general and specific expertise in handling sexual offences cases);
  • Employment law (x2);
  • Discrimination law (x2)

We are also seeking to recruit an individual (who may or may not be legally qualified) to provide specialist advice on exemptions and waivers relating to qualification requirements. This member should have knowledge or experience of one or more of the following:

  • the teaching of the foundation of law subjects on a Qualifying Law Degree or Graduate Diploma in Law;
  • knowledge and understanding of the Bar Professional Training Course curriculum;
  • provision of pupillage;
  • advocacy training;
  • supplying legal services to the public either as a barrister or authorised by another approved regulator;
  • mutual recognition of qualifications; and
  • equality legislation.

 APEX members will be engaged by the BSB on a case by case basis and enter into a paid consultancy agreement for services with the BSB for up to 10 days work per year. The BSB aim to recruit talented candidates and value diversity in background, skills and experience. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all applicants.

For more information on how to apply, please review the candidate pack, supporting details form, and equality and diversity monitoring form. Candidates should provide a covering letter outlining how they meet the competencies required for the position(s), together with a brief CV.

If you have any queries, please contact Rebecca Forbes, Governance Manager (RForbes@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk) in the first instance.

Please send completed applications to APEXapplications@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk.

We had requested applications by Monday 25 February 2019, to ensure that appointments were made in good time before the Independent Decision-Making Body (IDB) became operational in June. However, as we have decided that the IDB will now start operating from October (so that it can fully benefit from our new Case Management System which is still in development), we have extended the date for applications for APEX until 9.00am on Monday 1 April 2019. Interviews will now be held between 7 May and 17 May.

About APEX

APEX was formed as part of the BSB's governance restructuring which has led to more executive-led policy development and decision making. APEX members are appointed to provide external and independent advice to BSB staff working on policy development or taking regulatory decisions on exemptions from qualification requirements or enforcement cases.
