BSB publishes Professional Statement for Barristers

21 September 2016

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has today published a revised version of the Professional Statement, which now includes the Threshold Standard and Competences. It sets out in more detail the skills, knowledge and attributes which barristers are expected to have on "day one" of being issued with a practising certificate.

The Professional Statement is an important component of the BSB's Future Bar Training programme of reforms to education and training for the Bar.

A BSB spokesperson said: "The additional Threshold Standard and Competences clearly set out the thinking behind the broader Professional Statement. Key aspects of the Professional Statement include being familiar with the BSB Code of Conduct, continuing professional development and issues relating to equality and access to justice.

"The Professional Statement for Barristers will underpin the future system of training for the Bar. We will be consulting soon on a number of options for what this system might look like."

The regulator will host a series of forums on the forthcoming consultation on Future Bar Training later in the year.
