Barrister Satvir Aujla-Sahota was ordered to be suspended from practice for 12 months by an independent disciplinary tribunal at a hearing held on 21 October, following charges of professional misconduct brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).

The tribunal’s decision comes after Mrs Aujla-Sahota attempted to mislead her then Head of Chambers, who was investigating a complaint made against the barrister regarding records of her court attendance.

The tribunal found Mrs Aujla-Sahota had knowingly attempted to mislead and engaged in conduct which was dishonest.

Commenting on the order to suspend, Sara Jagger, BSB Director of Legal and Enforcement said: “The tribunal’s decision to suspend Mrs Aujla-Sahota acts as a reminder that barristers must not seek to mislead anyone during the investigation of a complaint against them. Honesty is a core attribute for all barristers and the tribunal’s decision to suspend Mrs Aujla-Sahota reflects this.”

The tribunal’s decision is open to appeal.

About disciplinary tribunals

The appointment, operation, and decisions (including sentencing) of disciplinary tribunal panels are performed by the Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS). BTAS is run independently of the Bar Standards Board, the barristers' regulator.  The BSB is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate.
