BSB appoints two new members to the Governance, Risk and Audit Committee

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has today announced two appointments to its Governance, Risk and Audit Committee (GRA).

Elizabeth Butler fills the current vacancy and she will join the committee on 1 July 2018. Stephen Hickey is to fill the vacancy that becomes available at the end of the year and he will start on 1 January 2019.

The GRA Committee meets eight times a year and is responsible for ensuring the Board's corporate governance standards and internal controls are maintained. The Committee keeps under review and advises the Board on all matters relating to the risk management framework and the BSB's internal audit function.

About Elizabeth Butler

Elizabeth Butler is a practising chartered accountant, specialising in business start-up. In a long career, she has worked for large listed companies, regulators and in the public and not-for-profit sectors. Elizabeth currently serves in a number of non-executive roles for the General Medical Council (GMC), the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and for the Regulator of Social Housing. Elizabeth was Chair of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust for seven years between 2011 and 2017 and has previously held many non-executive roles, notably for the Hyde Housing Association, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Queen Mary's Sidcup NHS Trust. She is also trustee and chair of the audit and risk committee of the Royal British Legion. 

About Stephen Hickey

Stephen Hickey was Director Generalin the Department for Transport and the Department for Work and Pensions. He was also Chief Executive of the Civil Service College, when it was part of the Cabinet Office and acted as Assistant Private Secretary to two Secretaries of State. Stephen's recent career has included roles as Chair, Non-Executive Director, Trustee and independent consultant in the health, transport and voluntary sectors, including as Chair of the Community Transport Association UK and St George's Hospital Charity respectively.
