The BSB is recruiting a new Vice Chair

We are looking for a Vice Chair of the Board to start in January 2016. The successful candidate needs to be a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and excellent analytical ability. We are looking for someone who can carry credibility with both the public and the profession and be an advocate for our independent, public interest regulatory role, especially towards the profession and its representative bodies and the judiciary.

The Vice Chair needs to be someone who can exercise sound judgement, showing integrity and respect for others in everything that they do. In forming close working relationships, particularly with the Chair, other Board members and Director General, the successful applicant must demonstrate strong team working abilities.

We are open minded as to the background experience of candidates, but we are particularly looking for a new Vice Chair with a depth of knowledge of the legal system and barristers' practice. Experience of other complex regulatory areas would also be an advantage.

As part of the leadership of the Bar Standards Board, the new Vice Chair will be at the forefront of significant developments affecting barristers and they way in which they work. Understanding what this means for those who use or are affected by the work that barristers do is a key element of the role.

The organisation

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, based in London. The BSB is responsible for setting the education, training and conduct requirements for being a barrister; handling disciplinary matters and assuring the quality of the profession.

The appointment is remunerated and will be for a period of up to three years, with the possibility of renewal for a further period of up to three years. The position is based in London, but some travel may be necessary. It requires a flexible time commitment equivalent to 45-50 days per year. Practising or working outside of London or the south-east need not be an impediment to becoming Vice Chair of the Board.

Candidates are required to apply by email to lcallegari@barstandardsboard.org.uk sending a CV, covering letter and a diversity monitoring form, which can be downloaded on the right side of this webpage. You can also find further particulars on the right side of this webpage under useful links. However, if you have a disability or for any other good reason are seeking a reasonable adjustment to the recruitment process, please contact Lynne Callegari to discuss on 020 7611 1422 or lcallegari@barstandardsboard.org.uk.

The closing date for applications is 5.00pm on Wednesday 11 November 2015.

Interviews will be held in Central London on Friday 4 December 2015.

The BSB aims to recruit a talented workforce and values the diversity in background, skills and experience of its staff. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all job applicants irrespective of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, maternity or pregnancy, marital or civil partnership status or gender re-assignment.
