Over 98% of barristers renew practising certificates on time

The overwhelming majority of the Bar renewed their practising certificate in time for this year's April deadline - using the online Barrister Connect system.

However, at the time of writing, some 84 barristers have yet to get in touch with the Bar Council Records Office to either pay the outstanding practising certificate fee or declare their decision to stop practising. As a result, they have been taken off the Barristers' Register and, if they are found to be practising, they will have to pay the penalty surcharge for late payment and risk disciplinary action by the Bar Standards Board.

All proceeds from the surcharges have been donated to the Barristers' Benevolent Association, which supports members of the Bar and their families who are in need or distress.

If you still need to pay the surcharge or change your status, please contact Records@BarCouncil.org.uk or call 0207 242 0934

Note to editors

Surcharges range from £15 to as much as £272 depending on the year of call.
