Equality and Diversity podcast launched

A new Equality and Diversity training podcast has been launched to help practitioners comply with their obligations under the new Bar Standards Board Code of Conduct rules on Equality and Diversity.

Hosted on the CPD cast website, the podcast outlines the requirements for self-employed barristers and barristers' chambers.  There is also information on new requirements for chambers to:

  • have a flexible working policy
  • use fair and objective selection criteria
  • ensure fair distribution of work amongst pupils and members of chambers.

Chair of the Bar Standards Board Equality and Diversity Committee, Rolande Anderson said, "The new rules are a response to the Equalities Act 2010, and the purpose of this podcast is to help barristers understand their equality and diversity obligations under the new rules. Much of this is common sense: it is about ensuring that there is nothing in one's behaviour or working environment and methods which would have the effect of disadvantaging people with protected characteristics.

"The podcast also addresses some questions about recruitment; those with responsibility for recruitment will need to undergo more specific training to ensure they know how to conduct a fair process which complies with the rules.

"We have aimed to cover common practical questions barristers may have and I hope that people will find this helpful."

Downloading and listening to the podcast will equate to 1 CPD point. New users can use promotional code BSB01 to download the podcast for free.
