BSB seeking new barrister members for its Professional Conduct Committee

The Bar Standards Board, the independent regulatory body for barristers in England and Wales, is seeking new barrister members for its Professional Conduct Committee.

We welcome applications from barristers with experience across a range of practice areas, with expertise in family, crime and employment law in particular.

The organisation

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for:

  • setting education and training requirements;
  • setting standards;
  • authorising organisations;
  • monitoring the service provided; and
  • handling complaints about conduct.

The Professional Conduct Committee is responsible for taking decisions on enforcement action where a breach of the Bar's professional obligations, as set out in the Bar Standards Board's Handbook, is alleged.  The work includes attending meetings, advising the Executive on legal issues arising from cases and preparing reports on individual cases.

The role is part time and is not currently remunerated. The BSB currently pays lay members only, but it is actively considering extending payment to barrister members.

Meetings will take place in London.

For more information and to apply, please visit the About Us section of our website www.barstandardsboard.org.uk. Candidates should provide a letter outlining how they meet the competencies required for the positions, together with a brief CV. We also request that you complete an Equality & Diversity monitoring form, as we are always seeking to improve the accessibility of our recruitment processes.

We welcome barristers from all backgrounds and are particularly encouraging those from diverse and currently underrepresented groups, such as women, and members of the LGBT, Disability and BME communities, to join us on our Committee.

If you have any queries, please contact Alex Williams, Operational Support Team Manager, in the first instance: awilliams@barstandardsboard.org.uk

Please send completed applications to: OST@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk

Closing date for applications: 5pm Friday 2 February 2018.

Interviews will take place in London in the week commencing 26 March 2018.  Dates may vary, including the possible addition of other dates, depending on panel and applicant availability.
