Old Style Bar Examinations
Information on how to obtain transcripts of your results of the Old Style Bar Examinations.
The Bar Standards Board is able to provide Certifying Letters and Transcripts for the 'Old Style' Bar Examination, or the Part I and Part II Examinations, taken from Hilary 1958 onwards.
Requests relating to the Bar Vocational Course taken from 1989/90 onwards should be directed to the appropriate Bar Vocational Course provider, as the Bar Standards Board does not maintain these records.
An Examination Transcript, which details the actual marks obtained, will normally only be sent to an Employer, an Educational Institution or other Professional Body rather than to the applicant; however, where it is necessary for the Transcript to be submitted directly by the applicant to the organisation concerned, the Transcript will be sent to the applicant in a sealed envelope.
Alternatively, a Certifying Letter is available, which will be sent directly to the applicant. This lists the subjects taken, Term and year of award and the final overall Classification achieved in the Examination, but does not include the actual marks obtained in each subject.
Applicants should contact whichever Body requires this information in order to determine which of the above is needed.
Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998, it is necessary that all applications for either of the above are submitted on a signed and dated application form which includes a Subject Information Statement.
There is a fee of £40.00 for Bar Exam Certifying Letter or Transcript requests submitted by individuals or third parties: eg Recruitment or Screening Agencies, employers, etc. Where a request is submitted from a third party, under the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998, the person for whom the information is being requested will be required to complete The Bar Standards Board's application form, including the Subject Information Statement. In addition, the fee of $40.00 must accompany the application form, paid in Sterling by Cheque or Bank Draft (payable on a UK Bank), or Postal Orders made payable to 'The General Council of the Bar'. Please note that payment by cash or Credit Cards cannot be accepted.
Requests for the Application Form and Guidance Notes for the above, or any queries regarding these procedures, should be directed to:
